The short answer

Hot sauce is peppers, vinegar and water in a bottle. Hot salt is sea salt with the peppers infused into the crystals, dispensed dry from a grinder. Both add heat at the table. Hot sauce adds liquid and acidity and lands where it is poured. Hot salt adds no liquid, no vinegar, and spreads evenly across the plate, one press at a time. Firecracker Farm Hot Salt is made by one family in Palm City, Florida, from sea salt and three peppers, nothing else.

Firecracker Farm Three Kings Hot Salt in the Pusher, a stainless steel push grinder

What hot salt is

Firecracker Farm Hot Salt starts with sea salt: solar-evaporated, non-iodized, washed in brine and screened to size. Carolina Reaper, Trinidad Scorpion and Ghost peppers, grown with organic methods, are dried, crushed and infused into the crystals. The flagship blend is called Three Kings.

It is gluten free and nut free, with no preservatives, no sugar and no additives. The equipment that makes it is used only for Hot Salt.

It comes in the Pusher, a stainless steel, spring-loaded push grinder you work with your thumb. A fast press gives a finer grind. A slow press lets larger grains through. When it runs out, you refill it from a 50 g pouch.

One table, more than one heat level

The most common practical win in our reviews is a household that does not agree on spicy. Hot sauce goes into the dish or onto one plate. Hot salt goes on each plate separately, so each person sets their own level.

“My family doesn't like spicy so now I can add some heat without ruining the whole dish for them.”

Kenneth C.

Lambeau Lemon Drop Hot Salt

Limited Edition Buddy Batch

Lambeau Lemon Drop

Ultra-limited batch from Corey's Lemon Drop Peppers grown directly across the street from Lambeau Field, home of the Green Bay Packers. Corey sent us enough of his magical lemon drop pepper to make 100 of these. When they are gone, they're gone.

Looks like street corn, tastes like a tangy wave of delightful heat. It's moderately sweet, gently spicy and vigorously tasty.

This is a special Buddy Batch of Hot Salt, made for a most excellent man. It's back a second time because it's that good.

A carefully selected blend of crushed Scorpion, Reaper and Ghost peppers with a hint of Tennessee Bourbon and bitters made their way into the crucible. The flavor that ensued may be the best Hot Salt we’ve ever tasted.

Coated crystals that burn with aromatic notes of tobacco and the mellow, sweet bite of an old fashioned. 🔥 It tastes like Heaven on Fire

Gritty, smooth, robust, intoxicating heat.

Smokey oak and tequila meet cocoa, with savory dense heat that builds as each of the Three Kings (Ghost, Reaper, and Scorpion) peppers traverse the palette.

Normalize Violence

I made this batch for Sergio and his dad. They're part of the 1% of people that like it really hot.

Most people are happy with Three Kings Hot Salt. Some People need the Hotter Stuff, even fewer step to the Apocalypto and Snake Eater. For those that think of pain as a flavor and self sacrifice as par for the course, I present Normalized Violence.

Since I'm one of them, I can't really say if this is hot or not and don't claim that for some it's hot enough... What I can tell you that most people won't like it.

This batch was made with Ghost, Scorpion, Reaper (all powdered and crushed) and some powdered Reaper X pepper solution made with some Reaper X powder I was able to obtain on the black market.

Hot salt and hot sauce, side by side

Hot sauce varies a lot from brand to brand, so that column describes a typical bottle. The quotes are from customer reviews, word for word.

Shelf stable. No refrigeration. Salt does not go off.

“Sauces seem to loose something with age. Not this salt.”

Lawrence F.

The gift for the person who has every hot sauce.

“the perfect gift for a man who has everything and every hot sauce!”

Stephanie B.

“he said it was his best gift ever, so of course I got one for myself.”

Nancy P.
Sodium

Salt is in most sauces too.

About 33 mg of salt per press. Heat outpaces the salt.

“the heat added is greater than the amount of salt added to the dish, so you don't feel like you're going to overdo the sodium.”

Patrick J.

“glad to see, the sodium content isn't crazy high.”

josh s.

When hot sauce is still the right tool

Hot sauce is a liquid with acid in it, and some food wants exactly that.

  • Wings, and anything you dip.
  • Marinades and braises where you want the acid.
  • Bloody Marys.
  • Anywhere you want the flavor of a specific fermented sauce.

Hot salt does not replace your favorite bottle. It replaces reaching for it at every meal.

People who switched, in their words

“So good , we really have given up hot sauce!”

Mike S.Hot Horse Hoof, August 2025

“only have 3 hot sauces down from a dozen”

Michael L.Three Kings Hot Salt, March 2026

“I have tried many hot sauces over the years, but this is different.”

David S.Three Kings Hot Salt, July 2025

“As a huge hot sauce fan I was skeptical about this product”

Court E.Pineapple Express Hot Salt, October 2025

“I figured with some of the or the hottest peppers listed as ingredients that this would be just hot and no flavor. WOW was I wrong”

Jeff S.Three Kings Hot Salt, July 2025

“It is a great taste that does not have the vinegar flavor of hot sauces.”

Joseph M.Three Kings Hot Salt, June 2025

The honest part

Three things a fair comparison should tell you before you buy one.

A few grains can shed from the bottom

When the grinder is carried loose, a few grains can fall out of the bottom. Two reviewers said so.

“some does leak out after use and a cap would make the grinder even more portable”

mark l.

“it does leak out the bottom a bit when moving it around so I just leave it in box it came in”

Harold H.

Why it is this way

The opening at the bottom is what lets the rasp deliver a clean press. The box it ships in and the walnut cube holder are where it is meant to rest.

The clear window can crack

A drop, or tightening it too far, can crack the clear window.

Why it is this way

The window is there so you can see how much salt is left. If a grinder ever breaks, we replace it. No return, no questions.

It costs more up front than a bottle

A Pusher with a 50 g refill is $59, which is more than a bottle of hot sauce.

“Expensive? Maybe. Worth it? Definitely.”

Lucas H.

Why it is this way

The price buys a stainless steel grinder that gets refilled, not replaced. An $18 refill is about 1,515 presses.

Hot salt questions, answered

Hot salt is sea salt infused with hot peppers. It is used dry, pressed from a grinder, where you would reach for hot sauce, so the heat spreads through the whole plate instead of landing in one bite.

No. A seasoning blend mixes pepper powder in with the salt. In Firecracker Farm Hot Salt the peppers are infused into the salt crystals, so every grain carries both. Three Kings has two ingredients: sea salt and peppers.

Three Kings is the everyday level. Hotter Stuff is the next step up. One customer, Chris H., put it this way: "1-2 pumps of Hotter Stuff gives me what 6 pumps of 3 Kings does." Start with one press and add from there. Taste it on food, not dry off your palm.

About 33 mg of salt per press.

No. Hot salt is shelf stable and needs no refrigeration. Salt does not go off.

It is dry crystals, so there is nothing to drip. The honest note is that a few grains can shed from the bottom of the grinder when it is carried loose, so rest it in its box or a holder.

About 515 presses per full grinder. A 50 g refill pouch is about 1,515 more presses.

Yes, for most uses at the table. It works on anything you would salt, like eggs, steak, pizza and popcorn. Hot sauce is still the better tool for wings and dipping, for marinades and braises that want acid, and for Bloody Marys.

Yes. It arrives in a black box with card sleeves and a handwritten note. One customer, Nancy P., wrote about giving one: "he said it was his best gift ever, so of course I got one for myself."
